Overview

About Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands is a highland district in Pahang state, situated at elevations between 1,100 and 1,800 meters in the Titiwangsa mountain range. The area was developed by the British colonial administration in the 1930s as a cool hill station retreat from the lowland heat, and it retains much of that character today: Tudor-style bungalows, a nine-hole golf course, rose gardens, and afternoon tea with scones are as central to the visitor experience as the tea estates and jungle treks.

The highlands are best known for the BOH Tea Plantation, one of the largest tea estates in Asia, covering over 1,200 hectares in the hills near Brinchang and Sungai Palas. Guided tours of the factory explain the process from plucking to packaging, and the plantation's hillside cafe offers tea-tasting with panoramic views over tiered green rows of tea bushes stretching across multiple valleys.

Strawberry cultivation is another signature product of the highlands. The combination of cool temperatures, ample rainfall, and fertile volcanic soil creates conditions suited to hydroponic strawberry growing. Multiple farms across Tanah Rata and Brinchang allow visitors to pick strawberries directly and purchase fresh fruit and strawberry products.

The Mossy Forest at the peak of Gunung Brinchang (2,031 m) is an ecological highlight. This elfin cloud forest at the highest accessible road in the highlands is perpetually draped in moisture, with trees covered in mosses, lichens, and ferns, and a wooden boardwalk that allows visitors to walk above the canopy without damaging the vegetation.

The district has three main towns: Ringlet at the lower entrance, Tanah Rata in the center which serves as the main commercial hub, and Brinchang at the highest elevation. Cameron Highlands is approximately 200 km from Kuala Lumpur by road, a three-to-four-hour drive via the Simpang Pulai route or the older Tapah road. Bus services from Ipoh and KL operate regularly. Temperatures range from 10-25°C year-round, making it one of the few places in Malaysia where a light jacket is needed.
