Overview
About Hua Hin
Hua Hin is Thailand's oldest beach resort town, a royal seaside destination that has welcomed Thai royalty since the 1920s when King Rama VI first established a palace here. Located on the Gulf of Thailand coast in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, about 200 kilometres south of Bangkok, it offers a more relaxed and sophisticated alternative to the busy island resorts of Phuket and Koh Samui, with an established beach culture, excellent golf courses and a thriving wellness tourism industry.
The town's character is defined by its royal connections. Klai Kangwon Palace — whose name translates as 'Far From Worries' — remains an active royal residence visited frequently by the Thai royal family. The vintage Hua Hin Railway Station, built in 1926 with its distinctive red-roofed royal waiting room designed in classic Thai style, is one of the most photographed landmarks in Thailand and a symbol of the town's heritage as the country's first seaside resort.
Hua Hin Beach stretches for several kilometres through the town centre, lined with hotels, seafood restaurants and hawker vendors. The beach is wide and sandy but not as pristine as Thailand's island beaches. To the south, Khao Takiab — Chopstick Mountain — is a forested headland topped by a temple and an active community of macaque monkeys, and marks the southern end of the main beach.
Night markets are a highlight of any Hua Hin visit. The Hua Hin Night Market on Dechanuchit Road is one of Thailand's most famous, selling seafood, street food and souvenirs. The Cicada Market, held on Friday and Saturday evenings in Nong Kae, offers art, handcrafted goods and live music in a beautifully landscaped outdoor setting. The newer Tamarind Night Market also draws large crowds.
Outside the town, Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park — the Park of 300 Peaks — is a spectacular landscape of limestone karst hills, mangrove forests and freshwater wetlands teeming with birdlife, about 60 kilometres south. Its star attraction is Phraya Nakhon Cave, reached by a scenic boat trip and a short hike, containing a royal sala pavilion that glows in morning sunlight. Hua Hin also serves as a gateway for exploring this park, the nearby beach town of Pranburi and the tranquil beaches of the far south.

Things to Do in Hua Hin
Hua Hin Night Market
The Hua Hin Night Market on Dechanuchit Road is one of the most famous night markets in Thailand, open every evening from approximately 17:00. Hundreds of stalls offer fresh seafood grilled to order, Thai street food, tropical fruits, souvenirs and local handicrafts. The market's lively atmosphere, colourful vendors and incredible variety of food make it an essential evening experience for every visitor to Hua Hin.
Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park & Phraya Nakhon Cave
A day trip from Hua Hin to Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park — the Park of 300 Peaks — featuring dramatic limestone karst hills, mangrove forests and freshwater wetlands. The park's highlight is Phraya Nakhon Cave, accessible by a short boat trip and a steep 430-metre hike, where a royal sala pavilion built for King Rama V glows in natural sunlight streaming through the cave roof. An unforgettable and unique natural landmark.
Cicada Market
Hua Hin's most artistically curated night market, held on Friday and Saturday evenings in a beautifully landscaped outdoor setting off Nong Kae-Takiab Road. Unlike typical Thai night markets, Cicada specialises in local art, handcrafted goods, unique clothing and artisan products alongside international street food stalls, craft cocktail bars and live music. The creative atmosphere and community spirit make it a highlight of any Hua Hin visit.
Ethical Elephant Sanctuary — Hutsadin Foundation
The Hutsadin Elephant Foundation near Hua Hin provides care for rescued elephants recovered from logging operations, circuses and ill-treatment. Visitors can spend half a day feeding the elephants, learning about their rescue stories and observing their care routines in a natural environment without riding or performance. The sanctuary prioritises elephant welfare and visitor education in equal measure.
Vana Nava Hua Hin Water Jungle
Hua Hin's premier water park featuring over 25 water rides and attractions set in a lush tropical environment with slides, wave pools, lazy river and dedicated children's areas. Vana Nava is rated among the best water parks in Thailand and is particularly popular with families. Hotel guests of the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort receive complimentary access, while day passes are available to all visitors.
Hua Hin Railway Station
Hua Hin's iconic vintage railway station, built in 1926 in a distinctive Thai-style with a red-roofed royal waiting room, is one of the most photographed train stations in the world. The station is still operational, with regular services to Bangkok and southern Thailand, and the royal waiting room — originally built as a summer residence — remains a beautifully preserved architectural gem that captures the resort town's royal heritage.
Khao Takiab (Chopstick Mountain)
A forested limestone headland at the southern end of Hua Hin Beach, topped by a large Buddha statue and a working Buddhist temple surrounded by a resident troop of macaque monkeys. The short hike to the summit rewards with panoramic views over Hua Hin town and the Gulf of Thailand coastline. The beach below the hill is quieter and less crowded than the main Hua Hin Beach.
Golf at Royal Hua Hin Golf Course
Royal Hua Hin Golf Course, established in 1924 and one of the oldest courses in Thailand, offers an unforgettable round of golf beneath the dramatic backdrop of Khao Hin Lek Fai hill in the town centre. The 18-hole course has welcomed royalty and presidents and retains a genuine historic atmosphere. Hua Hin is one of Thailand's premier golf destinations with several world-class courses within easy reach.
