Overview

About Hua Hin

Hua Hin is Thailand's oldest beach resort town, a royal seaside destination that has welcomed Thai royalty since the 1920s when King Rama VI first established a palace here. Located on the Gulf of Thailand coast in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, about 200 kilometres south of Bangkok, it offers a more relaxed and sophisticated alternative to the busy island resorts of Phuket and Koh Samui, with an established beach culture, excellent golf courses and a thriving wellness tourism industry.

The town's character is defined by its royal connections. Klai Kangwon Palace — whose name translates as 'Far From Worries' — remains an active royal residence visited frequently by the Thai royal family. The vintage Hua Hin Railway Station, built in 1926 with its distinctive red-roofed royal waiting room designed in classic Thai style, is one of the most photographed landmarks in Thailand and a symbol of the town's heritage as the country's first seaside resort.

Hua Hin Beach stretches for several kilometres through the town centre, lined with hotels, seafood restaurants and hawker vendors. The beach is wide and sandy but not as pristine as Thailand's island beaches. To the south, Khao Takiab — Chopstick Mountain — is a forested headland topped by a temple and an active community of macaque monkeys, and marks the southern end of the main beach.

Night markets are a highlight of any Hua Hin visit. The Hua Hin Night Market on Dechanuchit Road is one of Thailand's most famous, selling seafood, street food and souvenirs. The Cicada Market, held on Friday and Saturday evenings in Nong Kae, offers art, handcrafted goods and live music in a beautifully landscaped outdoor setting. The newer Tamarind Night Market also draws large crowds.

Outside the town, Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park — the Park of 300 Peaks — is a spectacular landscape of limestone karst hills, mangrove forests and freshwater wetlands teeming with birdlife, about 60 kilometres south. Its star attraction is Phraya Nakhon Cave, reached by a scenic boat trip and a short hike, containing a royal sala pavilion that glows in morning sunlight. Hua Hin also serves as a gateway for exploring this park, the nearby beach town of Pranburi and the tranquil beaches of the far south.

How far is Hua Hin from Bangkok?
Hua Hin is approximately 200 kilometres south of Bangkok, about a 2.5–3 hour drive by car or private transfer depending on traffic. What is Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park?
Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park — the Park of 300 Peaks — is a stunning landscape of limestone karst hills, caves, mangrove forests and freshwater wetlands located about 60 kilometres south of Hua Hin.
