About

Discover Hua Hin

Hua Hin is Thailand's oldest beach resort town, a royal seaside destination that has welcomed Thai royalty since the 1920s when King Rama VI first established a palace here. Located on the Gulf of Thailand coast in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, about 200 kilometres south of Bangkok, it offers a more relaxed and sophisticated alternative to the busy island resorts of Phuket and Koh Samui, with an established beach culture, excellent golf courses and a thriving wellness tourism industry.

The town's character is defined by its royal connections. Klai Kangwon Palace — whose name translates as 'Far From Worries' — remains an active royal residence visited frequently by the Thai royal family. The vintage Hua Hin Railway Station, built in 1926 with its distinctive red-roofed royal waiting room designed in classic Thai style, is one of the most photographed landmarks in Thailand and a symbol of the town's heritage as the country's first seaside resort.

Hua Hin Beach stretches for several kilometres through the town centre, lined with hotels, seafood restaurants and hawker vendors. The beach is wide and sandy but not as pristine as Thailand's island beaches. To the south, Khao Takiab — Chopstick Mountain — is a forested headland topped by a temple and an active community of macaque monkeys, and marks the southern end of the main beach.

Night markets are a highlight of any Hua Hin visit. The Hua Hin Night Market on Dechanuchit Road is one of Thailand's most famous, selling seafood, street food and souvenirs. The Cicada Market, held on Friday and Saturday evenings in Nong Kae, offers art, handcrafted goods and live music in a beautifully landscaped outdoor setting. The newer Tamarind Night Market also draws large crowds.

Outside the town, Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park — the Park of 300 Peaks — is a spectacular landscape of limestone karst hills, mangrove forests and freshwater wetlands teeming with birdlife, about 60 kilometres south. Its star attraction is Phraya Nakhon Cave, reached by a scenic boat trip and a short hike, containing a royal sala pavilion that glows in morning sunlight. Hua Hin also serves as a gateway for exploring this park, the nearby beach town of Pranburi and the tranquil beaches of the far south.

When to Go

Best Time to Visit Hua Hin

On the calm Gulf coast, Hua Hin is Thailand's oldest beach resort and a year-round escape — the Royal Family winters here. The dry season from November to April is the most pleasant: sunny, less humid and prime beach weather. The Gulf stays calmer than the Andaman, so it's a solid pick even in shoulder months.

  • Nov–AprDry & sunny — the best time. 28–32 °C, calm seas. Peak Dec–Feb and Thai holidays; book ahead.
  • May–OctWet season — hot with afternoon showers, but the Gulf is gentler than the Andaman; plenty of sunny hours and lower prices.
  • Golf seasonCool Nov–Feb mornings are perfect for Hua Hin's world-class golf courses — the high season for golfers.

Attractions

Things to Do in Hua Hin

Hua Hin is a genteel blend of royal heritage, golf, beaches, night markets and nearby national parks — the Thai middle-class and expat favourite. Two or three days covers the palace, the market and a day trip. It's an easy hop from Bangkok and Pattaya.

Hua Hin Beach & the Pier

A long, flat stretch of pale sand running the length of town — calm water for swimming, horseback rides for the kids and a view of the wooden fishing boats. Walk out to the landmark wooden pier at sunset for the classic Hua Hin photo.

Free; pier entry ~20 THB ($0.60).

Cicada & Chatchai Night Markets

Cicada Market is the trendy weekend market of art, design and gourmet street food under the trees; Chatchai is the old-school daily night market by the pier for seafood, clothes and souvenirs. Do both — the heart of Hua Hin's evening scene.

Khao Takiab & Monkey Mountain

The “Chopstick Mountain” south of town — a hilltop golden Buddha and temple with sweeping bay views, plus a resident monkey troop (keep food hidden). A short climb; combine with the quiet beaches below.

Mrigadayavan Palace (Klai Kangwon)

The elegant 1920s golden-teak summer palace of King Rama VI, raised on pillars over the gardens by the sea — all open-air verandahs and lattice work, a masterpiece of Thai-Victorian design. Tour the rooms when the Royal Family isn't in residence.

Entry ~30 THB ($0.85); dress modestly; closed when royals visit.

Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park

The “300 Peaks” park an hour south — limestone mountains, marshes full of birds and the Phraya Nakhon Cave with its royal pavilion lit by a shaft of light from a collapsed roof. A stunning half- or full-day trip; combine with beach and seafood at the fishing village.

Vineyards, Water Parks & Golf

Unexpected Hua Hin — taste wine at Monsoon Valley vineyard, ride the water coasters at Vana Nava Water Jungle, or play one of the region's top golf courses (Black Mountain, Banyan). The resort-town activities beyond the beach.

Transport

How to Get to & Around Hua Hin

Hua Hin is just 3 hours south of Bangkok on the new expressway — the closest proper beach resort to the capital. In town, the flat beachfront is walkable; songthaews and Grab cover the rest.

  • Bus & minivan from BangkokFrequent air-con buses and vans from Bangkok (3 hrs) from ~180 THB ($5). The standard transfer; the new motorway is fast.
  • TrainThe scenic southern rail line from Bangkok — slower but charming, arriving at the historic wooden Hua Hin station.
  • Private taxi / GrabDoor-to-door from Bangkok or the airports (BKK/DMK) — ~2,000 THB ($57), ~3 hrs. Best for groups.
  • Songthaew (green)The shared green pick-ups run fixed routes along the main road — ~15–30 THB ($0.45–0.85) a hop.
  • Scooter & bicycleRent to reach Khao Takiab and the vineyards — the coast is flat and easy riding.

Hua Hin sits on the Gulf coast — head north to Bangkok, east to Pattaya, or south toward Kanchanaburi and the islands.

Accommodation

Where to Stay in Hua Hin

Hua Hin runs the full range from heritage hotels (where royalty stayed) to condo towers and quiet boutique stays. Pick your stretch of beach.

Town centre / beachfront — best for convenience

Around Soi Bintabaht and the night market — walk to the beach, pier, restaurants and Cicada. Hotels, condos and guesthouses at every budget.

Khao Takiab — best for quiet beaches

South of town at the “Chopstick Mountain” — quieter sand, boutique resorts and seafood shacks. The laid-back pick.

North Hua Hin — best for luxury & golf

The five-star resort and golf-course zone toward Cha-Am — sprawling spa resorts, pools and fairways. The splurge for golfers and families.

Heritage hotels — best for history

The iconic 1920s Sofitel Centara (the old Railway Hotel) — colonial architecture, vast gardens and old-world glamour. A Hua Hin classic.

Food & Drink

What & Where to Eat in Hua Hin

Hua Hin is one of Thailand's great seafood towns — the day's catch straight from the pier — plus a strong café and fine-dining scene thanks to its Bangkok weekenders and expats.

Grilled seafood — prawns, crab and fish at the Chatchai Market stalls and pier restaurants. Khao mok gai — Thai biryani, a southern specialty. Roti & dim sum — the breakfast of the historic station district.

Vegetarian options are common at the international restaurants; look for “jay” signs at local stalls.

  • Chatchai Night MarketThe daily pier-side market — seafood grills, mango sticky rice and souvenirs.
  • Cicada MarketThe weekend gourmet market — regional dishes, craft beer and live music under the trees.
  • Naresdamri RoadThe seafront dining strip — seafood restaurants with sunset views.

Practical Tips & Budget

Most Western passport holders get 60 days visa-free. The currency is the Thai baht (THB). English is widely spoken. The beach is free and swimmable; the jellyfish are rare but watch the flags.

How much does Hua Hin cost?

  • Budget$25–45/day — a guesthouse, market food and beach days.
  • Mid-range$60–120/day — a beachfront condo, a Khao Sam Roi Yot day trip and seafood dinners.
  • Luxury$150+/day — a heritage or golf resort, a spa day and fine dining.

Good to know

  • Royal presence: Parts of the palace and town can close when the Royal Family is in residence — check ahead.
  • Golf high season: Book tee times ahead for Nov–Feb, the prime golf season.
  • Weekend markets: Cicada runs Fri–Sun only — time your visit.
  • Jellyfish: Occasional in the warmer months; a rash vest helps.
  • Apps: Grab and songthaews both work; the beachfront is walkable.

Information

Good to know

What is the best time to visit Hua Hin?
The best time to visit Hua Hin is from November to April, when the western Gulf of Thailand coast experiences its dry season with calm seas and sunny weather. Hua Hin receives less rainfall than the eastern Gulf coast (Pattaya, Koh Samui) and the Andaman side during this period. The monsoon season runs from May to October, with October typically the wettest month.
How far is Hua Hin from Bangkok?
Hua Hin is approximately 200 kilometres south of Bangkok, about a 2.5–3 hour drive by car or private transfer depending on traffic. Regular bus services run from Bangkok's Mo Chit and Southern Bus Terminal. A train service also connects Hua Hin Station to Bangkok, taking approximately 4–5 hours. Hua Hin Airport (HHQ) has limited domestic connections.
What is the Royal Connection to Hua Hin?
Hua Hin has been a favourite retreat of the Thai royal family since the 1920s. King Rama VI built the first royal palace here, and King Rama VII established Klai Kangwon Palace — 'Far From Worries' — which remains an active royal residence today. The royal connection gives Hua Hin a refined character and explains the presence of high-quality restaurants, luxury hotels and a well-maintained beach town atmosphere.
What is Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park?
Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park — the Park of 300 Peaks — is a stunning landscape of limestone karst hills, caves, mangrove forests and freshwater wetlands located about 60 kilometres south of Hua Hin. The park's highlight is Phraya Nakhon Cave, which contains a royal sala pavilion illuminated by natural light through an opening in the cave roof. The park is also an important bird sanctuary and is best visited on a day trip from Hua Hin.
What are the best markets in Hua Hin?
Hua Hin has several excellent markets. The Hua Hin Night Market (Dechanuchit Road) is one of Thailand's most famous, offering seafood and street food every evening. Cicada Market runs on Friday and Saturday evenings in Nong Kae and features arts, handicrafts, clothing and live music in a beautiful outdoor setting. Are there golf courses in Hua Hin?

What is the Cicada Market?
Cicada Market is one of Hua Hin's most popular evening attractions, held on Friday and Saturday evenings (and public holidays) in a tree-dotted outdoor setting off Nong Kae-Takiab Road. Unlike typical Thai night markets, Cicada focuses on local arts, handmade crafts, unique clothing and designer goods alongside international street food, craft cocktail bars and live music performances. The atmosphere is festive and creative, attracting both locals and tourists.
Is Hua Hin good for families?
Yes, Hua Hin is excellent for families. The town is generally calm and safe, with a beachfront area suited to families rather than the party scene found in some other Thai resorts. Several resorts offer dedicated kids' clubs and children's pools. Nearby attractions include Vana Nava Water Jungle waterpark, Hua Hin Safari & Adventure Park, Santorini Park (a Greek-themed amusement zone) and Scenical Street Hua Hin — all family-friendly.
