Essential Tips

What Every Traveler Should Know

These rules apply across the region. Get them wrong and you could be turned around at the border.

Passport Validity (6-Month Rule)

Every Southeast Asian country requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date. If your passport expires within 6 months, renew it before you travel — airlines will deny boarding.

Blank Pages

Ensure at least 2–4 blank pages in your passport for entry/exit stamps and visa stickers. Some countries (Myanmar, Cambodia) use full-page stickers. Running out of pages means a new passport.

Onward Ticket Requirement

Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia enforce proof of onward travel. Airlines check before boarding. Book a refundable flight out or a cheap bus ticket. If asked at immigration, have it printed.

Print Everything

Digital copies on your phone are not accepted at immigration. Print your e-visa, hotel bookings, return flights, and travel insurance. Keep copies in a separate bag from your passport.

Overstaying Fines

Thailand: 500 THB/day. Vietnam: $15–25/day. Cambodia: $10/day. Indonesia: 1,000,000 IDR/day. Overstaying is not worth the risk — some countries ban re-entry for serious overstays.

Visa Runs Are Riskier

Repeated border runs (leave and re-enter to reset visa-free days) are increasingly scrutinized. Thailand now limits visa-free entries. If you want to stay longer, get a proper visa or extension.
