Overview
About Coron
Coron is a municipality on Busuanga Island in the northern part of Palawan province, Philippines. It is one of the most celebrated diving and island-hopping destinations in Southeast Asia, known worldwide for the twelve Japanese warships sunk by a US Navy air raid on 24 September 1944. These wrecks — including the Akitsushima seaplane tender, the Irako refrigeration ship and the Kogyo Maru freighter — sit at depths of 10 to 40 metres in Coron Bay, blanketed in coral growth and teeming with marine life, making Coron one of the top wreck diving sites on earth.
Beyond the wrecks, Coron's defining feature is its landscape of razor-sharp limestone karst islands rising vertically from turquoise water. Coron Island itself is the ancestral domain of the Tagbanua, one of the oldest indigenous peoples of the Philippines. Access to the island requires a permit, and the Tagbanua carefully manage tourism to protect their territory. On Coron Island you find Kayangan Lake, frequently cited as the cleanest lake in Asia, where visibility reaches over 40 metres through water layered above ancient limestone formations. Nearby Barracuda Lake is famous for its unusual thermocline: divers descend through warm surface water at 28 degrees Celsius into a hot layer reaching 38 degrees, heated by volcanic vents beneath the lake bed.
The Twin Lagoon, also on Coron Island, consists of two bodies of water connected by a narrow underwater passage through a limestone wall. At low tide visitors swim through the gap; at high tide a wooden ladder and platform allow passage over the rock. Other highlights include Maquinit Hot Springs, one of only a handful of natural saltwater hot springs in the world, heated by an underground volcano and situated along the coast with views across Coron Bay. Black Island (Malajon Island) features a hidden cave beach adorned with stalactites, while Pass Island reveals a disappearing sandbar that only emerges at low tide.
Coron Town serves as the base for most visitors. It is a small, walkable settlement with a growing number of hotels, restaurants, and dive shops concentrated along the waterfront and National Highway. Mount Tapyas, directly behind the town, offers a 724-step climb to a hilltop cross with panoramic views of Coron Bay at sunset. The seagrass meadows around Coron support an endangered dugong population, and snorkelling trips to the shallow Skeleton Wreck — a Japanese gunboat encrusted in coral in just three metres of water — are accessible even to non-divers.
Access to Coron is via Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) on Busuanga Island, served by flights from Manila, Cebu and Clark. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to May, with March to May being warmest and December to February offering the most comfortable conditions.

Things to Do in Coron
Kayangan Lake Swimming and Sightseeing
Kayangan Lake on Coron Island is frequently cited as the cleanest lake in Asia, with visibility exceeding 40 metres. Visitors climb 170 limestone steps from the boat landing to reach the iconic viewpoint, then descend to the lake to swim among submerged rock formations. A Tagbanua ancestral domain permit is required as Coron Island is indigenous territory.
WWII Japanese Shipwreck Diving
Coron Bay holds twelve Japanese warships sunk during a US air raid on 24 September 1944. Key wrecks include the Akitsushima seaplane tender, Irako refrigeration ship, Kogyo Maru freighter and Okikawa Maru tanker, sitting at depths of 10 to 40 metres. Wreck penetration dives are available for Advanced Open Water certified divers, while shallower sections are accessible to Open Water divers.
Coron Island Hopping Ultimate Tour
The most popular tour in Coron visits Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, Barracuda Lake, CYC Beach and the Skeleton Wreck in a single day by traditional bangka boat. Group tours include a Filipino lunch prepared on the boat and snorkelling equipment. The tour departs from Coron Town port at approximately 8 AM and returns by 4 PM.
Twin Lagoon Visit
Twin Lagoon on Coron Island comprises two turquoise lagoons connected by an underwater passage through a limestone wall. At low tide, visitors swim through the narrow gap between the lagoons; at high tide, a wooden ladder and platform allow passage over the rock wall. The still, warm waters surrounded by towering karst cliffs create one of Coron's most photographed settings.
Barracuda Lake Diving or Snorkelling
Barracuda Lake is a unique dive site enclosed by sheer limestone cliffs on Coron Island. The lake is famous for its dramatic thermocline where water temperature shifts from 28 to 38 degrees Celsius as divers descend, heated by volcanic vents on the lake bed. Shimmering layers where freshwater meets saltwater create a surreal visual effect. Named after a barracuda skeleton found at the bottom.
Skeleton Wreck Snorkelling
The Skeleton Wreck is a shallow Japanese gunboat resting in just 3 metres of crystal-clear water near Coron Town. The wreck is heavily encrusted with coral and attracts colourful reef fish, making it one of the most accessible wreck sites in the world. Even non-swimmers can view it from a boat with a glass-bottom viewer, while snorkellers can float directly over the entire hull.
Maquinit Hot Springs
Maquinit Hot Springs is one of only a few natural saltwater hot springs in the world, located about 30 minutes from Coron Town by tricycle. The spring is heated by an underground volcano to temperatures of 39 to 42 degrees Celsius. Visitors soak in tiered stone pools overlooking mangroves and Coron Bay, with the experience being particularly atmospheric at sunset when the water glows in the fading light.
Mount Tapyas Sunset Climb
Mount Tapyas rises directly behind Coron Town and is climbed via a concrete staircase of 724 steps to a hilltop cross and viewpoint. The 30-minute ascent rewards visitors with a 360-degree panorama of Coron Bay, the town, and the limestone islands scattered across the sea. Arriving before sunset is recommended for the best light and cooler temperatures. The climb is free.
