Overview

About Coron

Coron is a municipality on Busuanga Island in the northern part of Palawan province, Philippines. It is one of the most celebrated diving and island-hopping destinations in Southeast Asia, known worldwide for the twelve Japanese warships sunk by a US Navy air raid on 24 September 1944. These wrecks — including the Akitsushima seaplane tender, the Irako refrigeration ship and the Kogyo Maru freighter — sit at depths of 10 to 40 metres in Coron Bay, blanketed in coral growth and teeming with marine life, making Coron one of the top wreck diving sites on earth.

Beyond the wrecks, Coron's defining feature is its landscape of razor-sharp limestone karst islands rising vertically from turquoise water. Coron Island itself is the ancestral domain of the Tagbanua, one of the oldest indigenous peoples of the Philippines. Access to the island requires a permit, and the Tagbanua carefully manage tourism to protect their territory. On Coron Island you find Kayangan Lake, frequently cited as the cleanest lake in Asia, where visibility reaches over 40 metres through water layered above ancient limestone formations. Nearby Barracuda Lake is famous for its unusual thermocline: divers descend through warm surface water at 28 degrees Celsius into a hot layer reaching 38 degrees, heated by volcanic vents beneath the lake bed.

The Twin Lagoon, also on Coron Island, consists of two bodies of water connected by a narrow underwater passage through a limestone wall. At low tide visitors swim through the gap; at high tide a wooden ladder and platform allow passage over the rock. Other highlights include Maquinit Hot Springs, one of only a handful of natural saltwater hot springs in the world, heated by an underground volcano and situated along the coast with views across Coron Bay. Black Island (Malajon Island) features a hidden cave beach adorned with stalactites, while Pass Island reveals a disappearing sandbar that only emerges at low tide.

Coron Town serves as the base for most visitors. It is a small, walkable settlement with a growing number of hotels, restaurants, and dive shops concentrated along the waterfront and National Highway. Mount Tapyas, directly behind the town, offers a 724-step climb to a hilltop cross with panoramic views of Coron Bay at sunset. The seagrass meadows around Coron support an endangered dugong population, and snorkelling trips to the shallow Skeleton Wreck — a Japanese gunboat encrusted in coral in just three metres of water — are accessible even to non-divers.

Access to Coron is via Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) on Busuanga Island, served by flights from Manila, Cebu and Clark. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to May, with March to May being warmest and December to February offering the most comfortable conditions.

Information

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Coron?
The dry season from November to May is the best time to visit Coron, with calm seas ideal for diving, snorkelling and island hopping. December to February offers the most comfortable temperatures, while March to May is hotter but still dry. The wet season from June to October brings typhoon risk and rougher seas, though diving is still possible on calmer days and prices are significantly lower.
How do I get to Coron from Manila?
The most common route is a direct flight from Manila (NAIA) to Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) on Busuanga Island, taking about one hour. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines operate multiple daily flights. From the airport, a shared van or shuttle takes 30 to 45 minutes to reach Coron Town. Alternatively, a ferry from Manila to Coron takes about 13 to 15 hours overnight via 2GO Travel.
Do I need to be a certified diver to see the WWII shipwrecks?
Some wreck sites require Open Water or Advanced Open Water certification due to depth and penetration requirements. However, the Skeleton Wreck sits in just 3 metres of water and can be explored by snorkellers. Several wrecks have sections visible at recreational diving depths of 10 to 18 metres, accessible to Open Water certified divers. Non-divers can still enjoy the wreck sites on snorkelling day trips that visit the shallower sites.
What is Kayangan Lake and why is it famous?
Kayangan Lake on Coron Island is frequently called the cleanest lake in Asia and the Philippines' most photographed spot. The lake sits in a natural bowl of limestone karst, accessed by climbing 170 steps from the boat landing. Its crystal-clear water offers visibility exceeding 40 metres, revealing ancient limestone rock formations below the surface. Swimming is allowed but sunscreen is prohibited to protect the ecosystem. An entrance fee and Tagbanua ancestral domain permit are required.
What makes Barracuda Lake unique for divers?
Barracuda Lake is famous for its dramatic thermocline — an unusual phenomenon where water temperature shifts from around 28 degrees Celsius at the surface to 38 degrees at depth, heated by volcanic vents beneath the lake bed. As divers descend, they pass through visible layers where freshwater meets saltwater, creating a shimmering visual effect. The lake is named after a large barracuda skeleton found at the bottom. It is one of the most distinctive diving experiences in the world.
Is Coron suitable for budget travellers?
Yes, Coron is more affordable than many Philippine beach destinations. Budget guesthouses and inns in Coron Town start from around USD 15 to 30 per night. Group island-hopping boat tours, which are the primary activity, cost approximately USD 15 to 25 per person including lunch. Street food and local restaurants offer meals for USD 2 to 5. The main expenses are diving courses and private boat charters, which are more costly but can be shared among groups.
What is the difference between Coron Town and Coron Island?
Coron Town is the main settlement on Busuanga Island where hotels, restaurants, dive shops and the port are located. Coron Island is a separate island across the bay, visible from the town, and is the ancestral domain of the Tagbanua indigenous people. Kayangan Lake, Barracuda Lake and Twin Lagoon are all on Coron Island and are accessed by boat tour from Coron Town. Visitors cannot stay overnight on Coron Island.
Do I need a visa to visit the Philippines?
Citizens of many countries receive a 30-day visa-free entry upon arrival at Philippine airports, including those connecting through Manila to Busuanga. This can often be extended at a Bureau of Immigration office. Always confirm the current visa requirements for your nationality with the Philippine Embassy before travelling.
